This amply illustrated book is the first ever on the fascinating life
and work of the distinguished potter/pioneer Walter B. Stephen (1876
- 1961). Stephen traveled west in a covered wagon as a young boy.
His experiences in Nebraska included living in a sod home near the
Sioux Indians, seeing the last Buffalo hunts and meeting Bill Cody.
Inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, Stephen and his mother began
their first pottery, Nonconnah, near Memphis, Tennessee about 1904.
Without prior experience they produced slip-decorated pottery of exceptional
merit.
Stephen operated a second Nonconnah pottery in North Carolina before
establishing Pisgah Forest Pottery in 1926. Here Stephen explored
oriental glazes and forms, pioneered the first crystalline glazes
in the south, and developed his cameo decorated wares. Reflective
of his early experiences in the west, his cameo scenes included covered
wagons, Indian hunts, cabins, fiddlers and other scenes of American
folk life. Stephen's artistic creations are appreciated nationally
in numerous private and museum collections.
